Job Summary/Overview

The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the maintenance, management and operation of the On Top of the World golf courses to ensure the quality, playability, and safety of the courses related to employee work practices and resident activities. Responsibilities include supervising all aspects and functions of the Golf Course Maintenance department. This is a visible position within the community requiring the utmost awareness of how actions and communication are perceived by residents and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following statements describe the principal functions of this position and the scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements.   • Responsible for golf courses, clubhouse grounds and landscaping
  • Assists in the maintenance of the equipment and golf cart fleet
  • Responsible for buildings, structures, parking lots, roadways, fences and other facilities located on or off property
  • Ensures fuel tank, pump and equipment compliance
  • Maintains tennis courts, swimming pools, miniature golf course, bocce ball, shuffleboard, softball field and other recreational facilities as assigned
  • Responsible for maintaining open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage and areas outside the perimeter of the golf course including but not limited to roadways, common areas, residential and commercial properties as assigned
  • Ensures sod farm and plant nursery are properly maintained
  • Ensures properties are managed in compliance with the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD)
  • Provides excellent customer service to members of the community, vendors, contractors and other employees
  • Maintains other properties as specified verbally or in writing by the Director of Golf Course Maintenance Operations
  • Responsible for the direction and supervision of the golf course maintenance staff and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, cart paths and other areas as directed by the Director of Community Maintenance Operations
  • Supervises the daily course set-up procedure including mowing, grooming, cup changing, tee marker location, cart path only and debris cleanup
  • Coordinates with Director of Community Maintenance Operations on special projects, daily work assignments and progress of work
  • Oversees and assists spray techs, irrigation techs, mechanics and crews as needed
  • Assists in the coordination and scheduling of pesticide applications, mowing and cultural practices based on volume of play and turf needs
  • Schedules and conducts weekly meetings with the Director of Community Maintenance Operations, Director of Golf and Golf Professional and provides weekly course maintenance schedule verbally or electronically
  • Works in conjunction with the Director of Community Maintenance Operations and Director of Golf on major maintenance that would impact the normal course or business or require the closing of courses
  • Schedules and conducts weekly crew meetings, outlining current challenges, safety and upcoming training, maintenance and projects
  • Assists in the creation and implementation of an annual maintenance calendar that will be distributed to other department managers and residents
  • Responsible for compliance with safety procedures including use of proper PPE, recordkeeping, SDS filing, and safe work practices
  • Schedules employee safety meetings and monitors employee work habits to ensure proper safety procedures and equipment operation are enforced
  • Conducts and documents post-accident investigations
  • Communicates daily with Golf Shop personnel outlining the day's maintenance activities and other upcoming activities of concern
  • Assists in the development and execution of the operational budget, long term goals and agronomic plan and practices
  • Assists other departments within the company using equipment, knowledge, expertise and programs as deemed necessary for the advancement of the company
  • Actively participates in industry associations including local, state and national Golf Course Superintendent chapters by attending meetings, participating in industry events and networking with fellow Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents
  • Assumes responsibility of the Director of Community Maintenance Operations in his or her absence
  • Performs on-call duties 24 hrs/7days
  • Directly supervises assigned members of the Golf Course Maintenance team, to include: interviewing, hiring and training staff, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding, counseling and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws
  • Performs all duties in adherence to Company standards
  • Strives to maintain a safe working environment through the prevention of accidents, the preservation of equipment, and the achievement of safe working practices
  • Maintains a positive and professional demeanor toward all residents, visitors and co-workers
  • Performs other duties as assigned whether verbally or in writing
Qualifications (Education, Experience, Technical Skills)

Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • 3+ years of experience as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Must be able to read, write and understand English with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred
  • Advance knowledge of agronomy and Turf Grass Management practices with a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods
  • Knowledgable of the maintenance, selection and upgrading of turf types commonly used on Florida golf courses
  • Thorough knowledge of general industry accepted golf course maintenance practices and equipment operation
  • The ability to operate various wood working tools in the construction, repair or renovation of buildings or facilities within the department
  • A thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf
  • Good time management skills and ability to multi-task
