Open Competitive: Three years of experience in the maintenance, operation, or management of a golf course and related facilities, including one year of supervisory experience.
Substitution- An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor’s degree in a related field can substitute for four years of experience; a master’s degree in a related field can substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for six years of experience.

Duties Description
- Under the general direction of the assistant golf course superintendent or other higher-level staff, plans, develops, directs, and supervises the operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of a golf course facility, including turf management and grounds.
- Plans, directs, and supervises revenue and non-revenue producing recreational activities and facilities associated with the course, such as cross-country skiing and tennis courts. tees.
- Supervise staff assigned to the course; operates and maintains power driven machinery, develops short and long-term work schedules and repair and rehabilitation projects.
- Determines the need for major and emergency projects; may assist on work project by performing skilled work; supervises contractors assigned to the projects.
- Direct daily operations including regulating hours and usage, handling special requests and coordinating activities, operations, and maintenance with other park staff and operations.
- Controls inventory, evaluates expenditures, determines staffing requirements and recruits in addition to train, supervise staff. Recommends procedures for fee and ticket collection.
- Assists the public and resolves problems and inspects facilities for compliance with rules, regulations, codes, procedures, and policies.
- Operate light trucks, passenger vehicles, tractors, landscape equipment and other equipment as required,
- Maintain irrigation system, repair and replace malfunctions.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non- competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.
OPERATING NEEDS:
- Must be available to work weekends and holidays, and regular shifts between the hours of 5am – 2:30pm depending on season.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a term and condition of employment.
- Selected candidate must obtain a Pesticide Technician’s License (Category 3A) within 6 months of appointment and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
- Selected candidate must upgrade to a commercial applicator’s license within two years of appointment and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
