Reporting to the General Manager, the Golf Course Superintendent will be responsible for the leadership, planning, and day-to-day execution of all course maintenance and agronomic practices. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the long-term direction of the course and contributing to the overall member and visitor experience.
Key responsibilities include:
• Leading and developing a team of 12 staff, fostering a high-performance and inclusive team culture
• Managing and optimising the annual turf maintenance budget
• Delivering consistently well-presented playing surfaces across greens, tees, fairways and surrounds
• Overseeing irrigation scheduling, system maintenance and water management practices
• Implementing innovative, evidence-based and sustainable agronomic programs
• Planning and executing course improvement initiatives and capital works projects
• Building and maintaining strong working relationships with ownership, club management and membership
• Ensuring compliance with all WHS, environmental and regulatory requirements
About the Club
The Sands Torquay, one of Victoria's premier coastal golf experiences, is seeking an experienced and driven Golf Course Superintendent to lead the presentation, conditioning and strategic development of this outstanding facility. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Surf Coast, designed by Stuart Appleby in 2004, the links-style layout challenges and delights golfers of all levels. This is a rare opportunity to steward a course that is deeply connected to one of Australia's most iconic coastal communities.
• Approximately $1.3M operating budget
• 12 full-time and casual staff
• Approximately 52,000 rounds of golf per year
• Turf varieties: G2 Bent Grass/ Poa greens with some greens being overseeded with 007. Santa Ana fairways and tees with Tall Fescue rough
• Rainbird Nimbus 2 Irrigation system
• Most of the equipment fleet is Toro with John Deere tractors. Ownership is looking to invest significantly in the next 12-24 months with various machinery upgrades.
• Club is in the early stages of engaging a golf course architect to have a 3-5 year master plan.
About You
You will bring:
• Diploma in Sports Turf Management or equivalent qualification
• Proven experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or as an Assistant Superintendent
• Strong agronomic knowledge across cool and warm season turf varieties
• Demonstrated leadership capability with the ability to motivate and develop a team
• Financial acumen with hands-on experience managing budgets and procurement
• Sound experience in irrigation management and scheduling
• A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with high attention to detail
• A genuine passion for golf and delivering an exceptional playing product
• Must have permanent Australian work rights
