Overview and Minimum Class Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and four (4) years of increasingly responsible golf course maintenance experience. One (1) year of skilled park maintenance experience involving the operation of complex power tools and motorized mowing equipment as well as pesticide and fertilizer application may be substituted for one (1) year of golf course experience. Knowledge of agronomy, horticulture, chemicals and their applications is desirable.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License; Basic First Aid and CPR Certificates; Washington State Public Pesticide License.


Job Summary
Under limited supervision, organizes schedules, coordinates and provides maintenance for fairways, tees, roughs and other areas and buildings at Fisher Golf Course. Serves as lead worker and provides direction and training for other park maintenance workers assigned to the golf course.
Essential Functions

Performs and/or directs operational duties such as specialized mowing, greens keeping, pruning and edging.
Assures optimum playing conditions by conducting daily inspections of turf and vegetation. Provides prompt identification of irrigation disruptions, insect infestation, soil inadequacies and other problems. Determines and implements appropriate courses of action to return course to accepted industry municipal golf course standards.
Anticipates and assesses unusual maintenance needs that may be generated by exceptional weather conditions or usage.
Identifies schedules and performs repairs and maintenance projects required by or best performed during the winter closure.
Programs and regulates automated irrigation controls and output in accordance with current weather conditions and specific turf requirements.
Records and maintains records of pesticide applications used in turf maintenance treatment for disease, weed and insect control. Monitors pesticide program to assure compliance with state statutes and safety and environmental mandates.
Assists in development and implementation of short- and long-term course improvement plans and strategies for the golf course.
Maintains a high level of expertise and knowledge of golf course maintenance practices, advancements and innovations including current developments in agronomy and horticulture.
Troubleshoots and provides repairs and maintenance on golf course buildings, signs, fences and associated golf course equipment.
Operates and trains others to operate all motorized and power equipment used for golf course maintenance including mowers, tractors, golf cart and a variety of complex power tools.
Safely drives and operates vehicle, trucks and other motorized equipment to perform required duties in a variety of locations, within a timely and efficient manner and adhering to all traffic laws and regulations.
Maintains inventory of chemicals and hazardous materials required for golf course maintenance according to standard safety practices.
Shares expertise and skills with other park maintenance operations activities during winter closure and as needed to accomplish skilled tasks and repairs.
Assists with emergency or exceptional motorized snow removal as needed.
Requires regular and reliable attendance.
Performs other related duties as assigned.


Major Worker Characteristics
Knowledge of maintenance procedures for tees, fairways and greens in relation to types of grasses, fertilizers, soils and drainage; insects and insecticides, turf diseases, fungicides, weeds and herbicides, as well as their interaction with one another; proper application of pesticides in addition to the use of landscape maintenance equipment and irrigation systems including automatic controls, water application rates and variations. Familiarity with golf course rules and etiquette. Ability to: read technical specifications and instructions; understand and follow oral and written directions; work independently with little supervision; plan and organize work; analyze situations accurately; adopt effective course of action; and may deal with irate individuals. May be required to lift heavy objects. Ability to drive and operate vehicles and attachments, equipment and tools with precision, efficiency, speed, and safety. Ability to possess a valid WA State driver’s license. Ability to recognize traffic hazards and other potential safety concerns and to make sound decisions and actions while operating vehicles, tools and machinery.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work requires driving and may travel to a variety of locations and is primarily done outside with exposure to all weather extremes, be exposed to insects, animals, pollen, dust, noxious odors, mud, water, and/or toxic chemicals. Capacity for sustained attention to functioning machinery and equipment. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs, ladders, and other inclines while maintaining balance. Frequent bending/twisting at knees/waist/neck while performing repairs, maintenance items and other tasks as assigned. Occasional kneeling/crouching/ crawling while making repairs in confined spaces and awkward positions. Constant use of both hands and arms in reaching/handling/grasping/fingering while performing repairs, and/or maintenance activities. Operates hand tools, yard equipment and heavy machinery. Occasional heavy work includes lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and operation of a variety of vehicles, equipment, hand tools and machinery. Continuous use of all senses including feeling/talking/hearing/ seeing while performing duties and while communicating with co-workers, general public and completing all tasks as assigned. Must be able to distinguish color and maintain long-term and short-term memory. Will be required to wear safety protective gear when necessary. UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to seasonal weather extremes and hazardous chemicals. Extension or change in working hours may be required.

The pay range listed for this position is establish through the City of Yakima’s Master Pay Ordinance in accordance with the Municipal Code and/or the applicable collective bargaining agreement. New employees generally start at step A with progression through the steps based on merit and successful performance evaluation.

City of Yakima employees are paid and accrue benefits on a monthly basis.

This position is covered by the AFSCME Municipal collective bargaining unit.
