Job Summary

Provides supervisory assistance to the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent on the job site including but not limited to oversight, inspection and approval of work activities of assigned crews; provides training in the performance of golf course or sports field construction tasks to work crews; and performs various construction tasks and administrative work.

Essential Job Functions


  • Performs staking and layout, installation of drainage, bunkers, greens and tees, finish work, sports field construction tasks and equipment operation.
  • Supervises multiple work crews of 2 – 10 employees.
  • Informs crews of the day’s planned activities and equips crews with necessary tools and materials
  • Instructs and trains crews in assigned tasks such as staking and layout, tee and bunker construction, sodding, seeding, drainage installation, sports turf installation and operating and maintaining equipment.
  • Verifies assigned tasks are executed by crews according to quality standards; monitors and ensures compliance with Company and project safety requirements.
  • Operates rubber tire mechanized equipment such as tractors, skid loaders and dump trucks.
  • Manages assigned crews inventory of equipment, materials, supplies and fuel.
  • Identifies and eliminates potential waste of materials that may occur during performance of tasks.
  • Ensures assigned equipment and tools are properly maintained by performing routine inspection and preventative maintenance.
  • Assists in maintaining project records such as delivery tickets, purchase orders and safety meeting rosters; assists with and is responsible for creating as-built drawings.
  • Reports potential problems with materials, equipment, employees, workmanship, schedule or safety to the Assistant Superintendent and/or Superintendent.
  • Performs work in a safe manner and in compliance with all Company safety standards and the directions of supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the work and success of the project and the Company by being solution-oriented, having positive interactions with all members of the team, and meeting quality, production and safety expectations set by the supervisor or Superintendent.
  • Performs additional assignments per supervisor’s directions.

  • Knowledge of golf course and/or sports field construction tasks and ability to apply principles in managing work crews.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply principles of project schedule and specification requirements in managing work crews.
  • Knowledge of and ability to manage job or task assignments of individual or multiple work crews.
  • Ability to perform and supervise staking and layout, installation of drainage, bunkers, greens and tees, finish work and equipment operation.
  • Knowledge and ability to train project staff on golf course and sports field construction tasks and equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of golf course layout or sports field components.
  • Knowledge of golf course or sports field building materials (e.g., greens mix, sand, gravel, grasses and sod, drainage, sports turf) and the ability to apply knowledge of materials to installation or maintenance tasks.
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely and efficiently operate rubber tire mechanized equipment such as tractors, skid loaders, excavators, and dump trucks.
  • Ability to use the following equipment and tools: shovels, rakes, chop saws/saws/blades, sod cutters and soil compactors.
  • Must maintain a professional appearance consistent with the position.
  • Ability to move individual tools and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to walk entire job site and stand or walk for long periods.
  • Ability to understand and follow basic verbal instructions to meet quality and accuracy standards and to communicate effectively with team member and supervisors.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving dexterous use of hands and tools and to lift, carry and operate various pieces of hand-held equipment.
  • Ability to use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Ability and willingness to follow all Company policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook and Safety Manual.
  • Demonstrates a sense of ownership in the work and commitment to the success of the project and the Company.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with fellow employees and supervisors and respect the rights of others.
  • Ability and willingness to work in outdoor elements: hot & cold temperatures, rain, mud, dust, noise, sun, thick underbrush, etc.
  • Requires average 55-hour workweek and willingness/ability to travel; regular and timely attendance during all scheduled work days and hours is required.
Education And Experience

  • Three to five years’ experience in golf course construction or golf course maintenance, with an emphasis on repairs or renovations.
  • Experience operating rubber tire equipment such as tractors, skid loaders, excavators (minimum 300 hours), and dump trucks in construction field.
