Summary

The Head Coach is responsible for the management, administration, and oversight of all phases of a nationally competitive athletic program in accordance with Barry University, the Sunshine State Conference (SSC), and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II regulations. The Head Golf Coach must demonstrate extensive knowledge of golf and is responsible for recruiting qualified student athletes, scheduling and coaching intercollegiate golf matches, and scheduling practice preparation. The successful candidate will possess strong skills in leadership, recruitment, budgeting, alumni and community engagement, and fundraising. The Head Coach must demonstrate a vision for men’s golf at Barry University that promotes student success, enhances community engagement, and supports the mission of the University. The Head Coach will fulfill other duties as assigned by their direct supervisor. The Head Coach understands the mission statement of the University and constantly strives to achieve the academic and athletic goals that directly reflect the mission statements of the department and the university.

  • This is an In-person 12-month position
Essential Functions

1. Teaching/Coaching

  • Provide successful coaching, counsel, and direction to ensure that team members have the opportunity to realize their potential as athletes, students, and members of the general University community.

  • Prepare student-athletes for NCAA, SSC, and other matches;

  • Develop, prepare, and execute practice schedules and competitions. Communicate practice times and event times with team members.

  • Instruct, teach, and coach student-athletes on game strategies and performance principles during practice and competition.

  • Promote a positive and inclusive team culture that promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth.

  • Conducts video analysis and instruction as a teaching and preparation tool as needed.

  • Follows established procedures in the event of a student-athlete's injury

  • Models professional behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards student-athletes, administrators, officials and spectators.

2. Recruiting/Retention:



  • Collaborate with departmental admissions staff to recruit, enroll, and retain high-caliber golf student-athletes for varsity-level competition.

  • Ensure that the varsity and developmental teams meet the annual squad size enrollment goal and maximize the student athletic aid budget.

  • Ensure that program recruitment activities adhere to University and NCAA policies and procedures.

  • Monitor and support the academic progress of student-athletes, emphasizing the importance of both athletic and academic success.

  • Collaborate with academic support services to ensure student-athletes meet eligibility requirements.

3. Administration

  • Plan/manage all competitions and practices of the program, including in-season and out-of-season player development.

  • Develop schedules for competitions that are fiscally efficient and spectator friendly.

  • Effectively uses fiscal resources to coordinate team travel and recruiting.

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the men’s golf program in the community and willing to interact with the media.

  • Represent the University at conference, regional, state, and national meetings relating specifically to golf.

  • Provide accurate data for individual and team accomplishments, as well as game scores.

  • Provide reports and documentation when required.

  • Communicate monthly recruiting activity with the athletic administration staff and enrollment partners.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of an assessment plan to measure program outcomes.

4. Compliance and Eligibility

  • Interacts with student success, eligibility, and student success staff as well as Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) on all matters pertaining to eligibility and academic success of each student-athlete.

  • Stay informed and ensure compliance with all NCAA or relevant athletic association rules and regulations.

  • Ensure player NCAA eligibility for competition and maintain player records of that eligibility. Updates and maintains relevant and pertinent information on Compliance Assistant, Salesforce, Workday and the ACS/Front Rush Athletic program

  • Educate student-athletes on compliance matters and uphold the highest standards of integrity.

  • Adhere to NCAA Division II, SSC, and Barry University rules and regulations, supporting the philosophy, goals, and mission of the University and its intercollegiate athletics program as well as adherence to departmental policies and procedures.

5. Community Engagement, Alumni, and Fundraising

  • Create positive support for the program within the campus community and outside constituencies, including alumni, parents, and friends of Barry University.

  • Provide leadership, direction, and budget goals for the men’s golf camp program.

  • Engage in the department's annual fundraising campaign and sponsorship solicitation activities and develops a fundraising initiative for the program.

  • Collaborate with Barry University Advancement to run the annual university fundraising tournament.

6. Facility/Equipment Oversight

  • Create and maintain inventory for uniforms, supplies, and equipment for effective maintenance of physical resources.

  • Report any facility needs to the Senior Associate Director of Athletics and Facilities staff as needed.

  • Ensure that the golf facilities and equipment are properly secured at all times.

  • Coordinate usage and schedule all maintenance and repairs of the golf Mercedes sprinter van used for transportation to practices and events; will include scheduling van for use by the women’s golf team when available.

  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in any discipline is required.

  • A master's degree is preferred.

  • A valid driver's license is required.

  • 1-3 years of related experience is required.

  • Red Cross/First Aid – CPR certification is required.

  • General Knowledge to identify, scrutinize, improve, and streamline work processes.

  • Comfortable with executing paperwork for projects.

  • Technically proficient in all office equipment.

  • General knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook.

  • Adept at written and oral communications.

  • Maintains good rapport with high school and youth coaches.

  • Exercises a high level of public contact on both the local, state and national level through games, recruiting, camps and clinics and developmental programs. Accepts constructive criticism and remains accountable for his/her actions (and his/ her staff).
