Overview:

The Golf Course Superintendent works indoors and outdoors supervising the maintenance of the golf course, ensuring proper maintenance practices, development, operations, playing conditions, and maintenance of all tools and equipment. This entails supervising staff, operating machinery, doing maintenance work, ordering supplies and performing basic accounting functions.

Essential Functions and Duties:
  • Works closely with Head Golf Professional and Board of Directors in preparing, managing and implementing yearly work schedules including but not limited to fertilization, chemical, aerification, topdressing, irrigation and all daily course maintenance duties.
  • Manages an aggressive water usage tracking plan and irrigation systems; provides monthly reporting on retaining ponds, wells, and other water source usage
  • Assists in preparing the annual budget for the department.
  • Assists in the overall maintenance operations of the course.
  • Designs landscape plans for facility grounds and implements the plan.
  • Inspects golf course daily and makes timely decisions; directs work activities of staff accordingly.
  • Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the club’s grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Develop and implement training programs for staff employees.
  • Identifies problems; recommends and implements remedies.
  • Supervises and performs daily golf course duties as needed.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize work.
  • Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to members.

Educational Requirements

Education Required: Graduation from a 2-year or 4-year Professional Certificate Program in golf course turfgrass management.

Certification(s) Preferred: Golf Course Superintendent's Assn. (GCSA) Class "A" member.

Experience Requirements

Years Relevant Work Experience: At least 2-5 years supervisory experience in golf course maintenance either as Head Superintendent or First Assistant. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Preferred: 5 or more years related industry experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Thorough knowledge of game of golf & specialized techniques & equipment used in course maintenance

· Thorough knowledge of horticulture including plants, grasses & pest control appropriate to this region

· General knowledge of budgeting & purchase of golf course maintenance equipment, supplies, and chemicals

· Ability to teach safety & instruct staff in use of power tools & machines and sound horticultural practices

· Knowledge of planning & developing facility expansions and new construction

· Great interpersonal & communication skills to lead staff & interact with public

· Basic math skills to measure volumes/proportions & perform simple accounting

· Ability to plan, organize, develop, and supervise staff

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other employees, members of the Board of Directors, vendors, membership and the general public.
