The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking Golf Course Superintendent to be a part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. With more than 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more, FCPA is an exciting organization to be a part of and there are many opportunities for staff to make a difference at every level.
Under the direction of the Director of Agronomy, will be fully responsible for all maintenance functions associated with a multi-course golf complex, driving range and practice areas. Develops and implements a comprehensive turf management program. Directs the work of staff related to turf management, irrigation, equipment repair, general maintenance and custodial duties. Coordinates maintenance activities with general manager in order to ensure maximum utilization of the golf complex, driving range and practice areas. Oversees all aspects of a workforce comprised of up to 14 merit employees, 10-15 part-time employees and a team of 10 volunteers. Recruits, hires and schedules all merit and seasonal staff related to the operation, maintenance and care for all golf course play areas. Trains and evaluates all staff and performs all performance management activities related to employee development. Responsible for an integrated pest management program and compliance with all local, state and federal laws and guidelines. Oversees a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for a fleet of turf maintenance equipment. Researches and writes specification and/or justifications for major course improvements, capital equipment and annual operating budgets. Daily verifies safe working conditions for all employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from a two-year associate degree program with major course work in agronomy, turfgrass management, recreation and parks, horticulture or related field plus four years' experience as golf course superintendent or other applicable position at a golf course.
CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. Ability to use both hand and foot controls for extended periods. Ability to wear respirators and other protective equipment and clothing. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

- Manages the maintenance and operation of a large fleet of greens mowers, fairway movers, trim mowers, rough mowers, utility vehicles, spray tanks, sand trap rakes, seeders, aerators, etc.;
- Develops and implements a detailed turf management plan for assigned greens, tees, roughs and lawn areas (and special complexities of cart paths where present);
- Establishes criteria for and determines golf course playability and authorizes the opening and closing of the grounds;
- Coordinates diverse maintenance, irrigation, and pesticide activities for user satisfaction and risk control;
- Supervises the maintenance and operation of a large or multiple automated irrigation system including pumphouses, central computers, field controllers, valves and sprinkler heads;
- Plans for and supervises major improvement projects such as greens and tees construction, cart path construction, sand bunker construction, site landscaping, pond dredging, etc.;
- Authorizes purchase requests and invoices for payment;
- Inspects park facilities and grounds for safety hazards and operational deficiencies, recommends improvements and initiates corrective measures;
- Compiles and retains operational and safety records and complies with federal, state and County safety standards;
- Develops budget justifications for capital equipment, staffing and annual operating supplies;
- Accountable for the purchase, storage and application and disposal of hazardous materials including pesticides, fertilizers and other turf care products;
- Hires, supervises, schedules and evaluates a large staff;
- Plans, schedules and conducts specialized on-site staff training;
- Completes and submits various financial, administrative and statistical reports;
- Adheres to revenue and expense limits, goals and guidelines for specialized areas of supervision.
